Beschrijving EN

Bolyai János lived most of his life in Târgu Mureş. He is best known for his work in the fields of non-Euclidean geometry. While studying at the Royal Engineering College in Vienna he became so obsessed with Euclid's parallel postulate that his father Bolyai Farkas (also a renowned mathematician) wrote to him: "For God's sake, I beseech you, give it up. Fear it no less than sensual passions because it too may take all your time and deprive you of your health, peace of mind and happiness in life". János, however, persisted in his quest and eventually came to the conclusion that the postulate is independent of the other axioms of geometry and that different consistent geometries can be constructed on its negation. He wrote to his father: "Out of nothing I have created a strange new universe".

The Pseudosphera monument is in the Bolyai square, Târgu Mureş, România. It was made for the 200 th aniversary of Bolyai János in 2002 december 15th. It is said to be the world's first mathematical monument.

The monument itself was designed by Horvath Sandor who wasn't a professional sculptor, but a mathematician, and a big admiror of Bolyai János. The base of the monument is a 6 leveled stair covered in green marble than was brought from India. On the seventh level lies a tubular square structure, that also has a mathematical meaning. In the center of this structure is a piece of the pseudosphere in the shape of a bell.

The monument has a special secret. With the help of a disguised mirror system, every year on November the 3rd at a certain hour a quote is highlighted that is placed on the stairs. The quote says: "Out of nothing I created a whole new world". This quote was part of a letter that János wrote for his father on November the 3rd 1823 explaining his discovery.
