The term "ban", of persian origin, started to be used in slavic languages and hungarian from the times of avars. The leaders of avars was the Han, Bajan - ruler of the horde, name that some researchers presumed it is the origin of the medieval ban title.
Starting with late XV century, the Ban is the leader of the counties of Olt river right side (Oltenia), the only leader of Wallachia which, beside the king, had the power to pronounce capital executions. Oltenia was also known as "Banatul Craiovei" and Craiova is still named "Baniei Citadel".
