"Ion Barbu" Theoretical Highschool
In 1960, on Nabucului street 18, the "no.36 Middle School" is established, title retained until 1967 when it changes to "no.36 Theoretical Highschool", with classes being taught in french, until 1977. Since 1978 it was known as "no.9 Theoretical Highschool", then, between 1979 and 1982, as "no.1 Natural Sciences Highschool" because most classes featured biology, chemistry and industrial chemistry. Only two such schools existed in Bucharest and were the only ones to supply the universities of biology, chemistry, human and veterinarian medicine, and farmacy.
In 1983 the name is again changed to "no.35 Industrial Highschool", by adding several classes in mechanics, with the chemistry-biology profile retained, yet reduced. Unfortunately, the consequently much higher level of competition required to join these classes simply turned many pupils away.
Since 1991 it retained it's status as theoretical - with both technical and humanistic under the name "Ion Barbu" Theoretical Highschool in honor of the poet and mathematician Dan Barbilian (a.k.a. Ion Barbu); showing that anyone, if so desires, can develop their potential in both art and science.
