Description
Sitta europaea
Most often known as the nuthatch.
This bird is part of Sittidae family, which includes middle sized birds, large head and sturdy legs, well adapted for climbing. Pairs hold permanent territories, and nest in tree holes.
The nuthatch has the ability to walk with it's head downwards (unlike most other birds, that walk with their head forward) and has the ability to walk belly up underneath branches.
In the wild, they feed on insects, seeds, nuts, but they will often consume human made food like cheese, bread, butter. These birds will store food reserves and are very competitive where food is concerned. Usually they will prevail against other species, driving them away.
Most significant predator that hunts the nuthatch is the Eurasian Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus).
The species lives in deciduous and mixed forests, also in parks, where they can be seen all year. Populations are numerous and stable, thus Sitta europaea does not require special conservation measures.
