The monastic establishment was founded by Vlad Tepes Voivode himself about the middle of the 15th century, and then it was reconstructed during the reign of Radu Serban Voivode towards the end of the 16th century and at the beginning of the 17th century. Inside the church of the monastery there were interred Radu Serban Voivode, Nicolae Patrascu Voivode (the son of Mihai Viteazul Voivode), as well as the members of the Cantacuzino family.
The church underwent repairs and restoration under the earnest care of the princely Serban Cantacuzino between 1699 and 1703; during the same period, it was also painted. In 1769, the church was severely damaged by a Turkish invasion, and in 1854, it was repaired and restored to its former condition.
